Bloggers and publishers looking to get their content retweeted on Twitter must ensure their news articles are original and of a high quality, it has been advised.

According to Econsultancy editor-in-chief Chris Lake, Twitter can be something of a "publisher's dream" thanks to how much traffic it can drive to a web page.

This is particularly the case when Twitter users retweet a specific article, recommending that their friends visit the page in question, he noted.

When it comes to crafting content that is likely to be retweeted, articles should be unique and come with short, descriptive headlines, Mr Lake said.

Also important are the use of eye-catching adjectives, utilising hashtags and timing publication so that they appear at the optimum moment for retweeting in a variety of timezones, he commented.

"Jump on the hashtag train by appending your tweet with '#hashtag'," he remarked.

"It may also help your tweet to be picked up by the autoretweeters and the search bots/feeds they employ."

Two per cent of all UK visits to social networking sites went to Twitter in the four weeks ending June 27th, according to Hitwise.
