The Web 2.0 phenomenon continues on the internet with the launch of a new Intel service that taps into the user generated content (UGC) trend by allowing visitors to rate their favoured websites.

Intel launched the CoolSW (Cool Software) last month, which lets users nominate and rank the best software packages and website appearance and layout, reports the Independent.

Steve Santamaria, Intel's director, said the website's ultimate aim was to discover "the next Google".

He added: "Not all of the emerging software companies are coming out of Silicon Valley. Software is happening globally."

The initiative was initially set up as an Intel-only website but following a £19,000 investment and upgrade was released as a business tool across the web.

Intel is not without its competitors in this sphere though. Alongside the numerous blogging communities and networks that exist online, Dell has also realised the importance of UGC with its IdeaStorm site - a community focussed on new business ideas and initiatives.
