Google has made a new acquisition that could serve to strengthen the company's work in the social search sector.
Aardvark allows searchers to gain answers to specific questions by tapping into their friends and contacts' knowledge and experience.
It analyses queries and matches them to those people who have the interests and knowledge to offer the best answer.
The service can currently be accessed through Google Labs and may have implications for companies' online marketing operations.
"We're very impressed with the Aardvark team and the technology they've worked hard to build, and we're looking forward to collaborating to see where we can take it," commented Google director of product management for search Johanna Wright in a blog post.
Last October, Google unveiled its Social Search product, which sees results from friends and contacts' websites and blogs included in listings when a signed-in user conducts a standard web search - potentially having an impact on search engine optimisation.
