Google has announced that it is now able to perform optical character recognition for scanned documents published on the web in PDF format.
In a post on the Official Google Blog, product manager Evin Levey explained that the search engine was previously unable to include many scanned documents in search listings as it could not verify the content of these files.
However, Google can now convert a picture of text into searchable content that can be indexed by the search engine - a step that may benefit those looking to give their search engine optimisation a boost.
"This is a small but important step forward in our mission of making all the world's information accessible and useful," Mr Levey commented.
Earlier this year, Adobe announced a partnership with Google and Yahoo! to make Flash content more searchable.
The technology that will enable this was recently unveiled by Adobe at the AJAX World RIA Conference & Expo, InfoWorld reported.
