Google has announced changes to its online news search engine and query suggestion service that allow users to make local searches more easily.
The company said that UK, Indian and Canadian users of Google News can now make use of new sections that let them track news articles from their local area, as the search engine can now scan stories to see which location the piece is about and from.
It added that its ranking procedure will place an emphasis on news articles from local sources.
Meanwhile, web users in the UK and other countries can now make use of localised query suggestions through Google Suggest, which offers a list of potential searches in a drop-down list as the user types their query into the search box.
"We've localised our suggestions to account for various cultural and local factors to offer suggestions that look familiar to our users," commented David Kadouch, product manager at Google, in a blog post.
