Google has given a sneak preview of its annual year-end Zeitgeist by releasing a top ten list of the fastest growing search terms in the US during 2008.

'Obama' ranked first off the back of Barack Obama's successful presidential election campaign, followed by 'facebook', 'att', 'iphone' and 'youtube'.

Two more US election-related terms 'fox news' and 'palin' ranked sixth and seventh, with' Beijing 2008', 'david cook' and 'surf the channel' rounding out the top ten.

'Facebook', 'youtube' and 'iphone' all returned to the list for the second year in a row, while 'myspace' dropped out for the first time since 2005.

Ask.com also revealed its top ten most common queries of 2008 this week, with questions ranging from first-placed "am I pregnant?" to the Top Gear-linked "who is the Stig?" in ninth.

"Where can I get a cheap loan?" and "how do I lose weight" also featured in third and eighth position respectively.ADNFCR-1351-ID-18914219-ADNFCR
