Google has said that users are increasingly asking for more precise results from their internet searches, moving from "give me what I said" to "give me what I want".

Writing in the search engine giant's online blog, Amit Singhal, a fellow of the company, said that users' expectations have increased and, as such, the firm's approach to searches has changed.

He commented that in order to realise internet users' demands, Google attempts to better understand the content of each site, rather than blindly searching by simple keywords.

"Over the last decade we have pushed the technologies for understanding these three components (of the search process) to completely new dimensions," Mr Singhal revealed.

An aspect that the engine now searches for is the freshness of information on the page and Google technology tries to interpret requests by working out the kind of site a person is looking for.

"Original and compelling" content which is updated regularly helps improve websites' search engine rankings by appealing to the formulas which judge sites' relevance, Google's AdSense blog revealed last week.
