Google has launched a new Social Search offering that may have an impact on companies' search engine optimisation (SEO) strategies.
The feature was initially unveiled as an experiment last autumn, but is now available to all of those who have signed into their Google accounts.
It enables users to view content from their friends' websites and blogs when conducting searches, as well as displaying the usual web results.
This means that a search for a particular city will throw up official and unofficial listings for that location, as well as any friends' blog posts on that particular place, for example.
Users can also make use of a similar social function within Google's image search engine to bring up relevant photos uploaded by their friends to the web.
The Social Search feature could affect businesses' SEO campaigns if they are in the habit of writing well-optimised blog and site copy and have built up a significant user base on the web.
"Any business looking to get some play in Google search would do well to have as many connections established as possible via various social networking sites and tools," Chris Crum of WebProNews states.
