The number of online searches conducted via Google in the US during September rose by almost 21 per cent compared with last year.

This is according to new figures from Nielsen Online, which revealed that over 4.8 billion queries were made through Google last month, compared with Yahoo!'s 1.5 billion searches.

Microsoft's Live Search service came third with over 953.5 million queries, followed by AOL, Ask.com, My Web, Comcast and AT&T Worldnet.

These figures may be an indicator of the importance of ensuring search engine marketing strategies take a variety of engines into account, rather than just Google.

In total, nearly 8.1 billion online queries were made by US web users during September, up 9.4 per cent on the same month in 2007.

Google has a market share of nearly 60 per cent, with Yahoo! seeing 18.1 per cent and Microsoft 11.8 per cent.

This follows recent figures from comScore suggesting that Google remained the most popular website overall among American web users last month.ADNFCR-1351-ID-18846449-ADNFCR
