Web users searching for information on Google will now be offered real-time news from websites such as Twitter and Facebook.
Typing in a keyword to the search engine will now bring up the latest online news from blogs, social media and other portals.
People should now be able to access the breaking news via Google quicker than ever before.
In a statement on the Official Google Blog, a fellow at the company Amit Singhal said: "Our real-time search features are based on more than a dozen new search technologies that enable us to monitor more than a billion documents and process hundreds of millions of real-time changes each day."
He also thanked the firm's new partners Facebook, MySpace, FriendFeed, Jaiku and Identi.ca, which have joined Twitter to be part of the new initiative.
This week also sees the launch of Google Goggle, a visual search technology available for the Android smartphone.
