Google may be planning to focus less on
keywords and more on user questions as part of its search operations, it has been suggested.
Marissa Mayer, vice-president of search products and user experience at Google, told .net magazine that the search engine sees questions as an important development when it comes to finding information on the web.
She also indicated that Google is looking to integrate information from videos, books and
online news into search, as well as harness the power of users' relationships with others "to understand which news to direct them to [and] which local events to direct them to".
"Maybe the search engine of the future will know where you're located. Maybe they'll know what you know already, or what you learned earlier today," Ms Mayer remarked.
One way in which questions could be integrated into online search is through semantic web technology - University of Karlsruhe professor Dr Rudi Studer recently told the
Yahoo! Searchblog that the sector is "getting closer" to fully realising the benefits of semantics in web search.
