Microsoft's Bing search engine is looking at ways to help UK newspapers better monetise their online news.
This is according to Microsoft UK search director Stefan Weitz, who told new media age that the company is focusing on British online news because there is more of an "appetite" for such content in the UK compared with other countries.
He explained that Microsoft's official stance on the topic of online news is that content owners should be properly compensated for what they produce.
"There's going to have to be something that helps content creators get paid - and there's no reason it can't be through search," Mr Weitz remarked.
Currently, Google helps online news publishers through its Google News aggregator by offering platforms such as Living Stories to help companies present their news articles differently for web audiences.
It also offers a scheme that lets publishers with subscription-only content to specify how many news articles users can see for free via Google News before they are asked to pay for them.
