Internet advertising has experienced 41.3 per cent year-on-year growth in the first half of 2007, a recent study has shown.

Figures from the biannual study, which is commissioned by the Internet Advertising Bureau (IAB) in association with PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), found the internet advertising sector is now worth £1,334.3 million.

This is significantly higher than the figure of £917.2 million in the previous year and now means the online advertising share has increased to 14.7 per cent overall.

Guy Phillipson, IAB chief executive, said the online market was experiencing "exceptional growth".

He added: "[Some] 90 per cent of internet users are on broadband now and nearly 40 per cent are using wireless.

"We're also seeing women and the over 50s spending far more time online, which makes the internet a very attractive medium to a broader set of advertisers."

Paid for search saw an increase of 44 per cent to £762.3 million, which is a 57.1 per cent share of the online total.

The IAB believes that online advertising expenditure could hit a potential new high of £2.75 billion by the end of 2007.
