The best source of traffic for retail ecommerce websites remains search engines, according to Screen Pages.

Perhaps highlighting the potential of good search engine optimisation (SEO), the study indicated that 63 per cent of web traffic to these portals came via Google, Yahoo! and other engines.

People typing in individual URLs accounted for 16 per cent of all traffic, while 11 per cent came through links from other websites and nine per cent from email marketing.

Screen Pages, a company that provides ecommerce value-added marketing services to other businesses, conducted the research between January and June 2009.

A further finding from the survey was that 43 per cent of all internet traffic is to do with branding - it is apparently "the segment that offers greatest short-term sales potential".

Last week, vice-president of web development firm dzine Peter Crisafi said that the SEO landscape has changed with the arrival of Microsoft's Bing.

He called the site and Google "powerhouse search engines" and suggested web developers need to be mindful of both portals when optimising their sites for a greater internet presence.
