Most web designers can create a search engine friendly site but cannot offer search engine optimisation (SEO), an expert has claimed.

Pete Handley, campaign delivery manager for SEO firm Vertical Leap, wrote in the company blog that a search engine friendly site is one that is easily crawled by the engines.

However, websites that are just search engine friendly could find themselves "languishing" in the rankings unless a searcher is looking for specific content which is unique to the site, he explained.

"SEO is targeted work on a site that is seeking rankings for particular phrases by ensuring all areas that can be modified for optimum performance are modified to give it the best chance of success," he commented.

According to Google, the "single most important" aspect of creating a popular site is good quality content as that is what attracts users and inbound links.

Natural links are useful because they affect how Google's algorithms rank a site as they show that other sites consider the content to be valuable, the search engine explains.
