Businesses looking to drive website traffic by creating linkbait should make sure they know who their audience is first, according to one expert.
Chris Lake of Econsultancy says the key to successful linkbait is building up a network of followers on both social media sites and blogs and writing for this specific group of people.
He notes that linkbait can be useful when it comes to search engine optimisation (SEO), although the popularity of retweeting links means SEO may not get as much of a boost from Twitter users - who all post from the same domain - as bloggers, who each write on a different site.
Some of the main types of linkbait include lists, infographics and whitepapers, as well as controversial, argumentative and exclusive posts.
Mr Lake also recommends writing "killer headlines" as web users will use this text to link to particular pages. He adds: "If you're doing the linkbait thing properly you should have a Google goal in mind."
Matt Cutts of Google says linkbait can be defined as "something interesting enough to catch people's attention".
