Firms must not ignore the online marketing potential offered by getting their sites listed high up in search engines, according to one expert.

Sam Tilston, marketing director of Memorybits.co.uk, explained that as search is the main way in which web users find information on the internet, it is only natural that businesses look to search engine optimisation (SEO) to capitalise on this.

"You can have the best products, services and website in the world, but if no one can find your site then your site will have no impact," he commented.

Mr Tilston gave this warning after a study by consultancy Conductor suggested that some of the biggest companies in the US are still failing to take full advantage of SEO to attract a wider web audience.

It found that just two per cent of Fortune 500 websites placed in the top search results for their key terms, with more than half of these sites having next to no visibility in search listings.
