There are a number of implications for search engine optimisation (SEO) now that search engines are integrating real-time and live search, it has been suggested.

Will Cooper, deputy news editor for new media age magazine, said that optimising a social network is a "tricky" thing to do.

He added: "With universal search or multimedia search, people have optimised their content like videos and images, but this is the next along that line."

More emphasis will be put on the content of websites, Mr Cooper explained, meaning companies are going to have to create material that will get consumers talking.

The expert also indicated that he does not think keyword SEO will become outmoded, although "new and exciting content" will be required.

Last month, Econsultancy and Guava published a research document called the UK Search Engine Marketing Benchmark Report 2009.

It claimed that social media marketing is the sector where clients are most likely to raise their investment in the next 12 months and also noted that 48 per cent of respondents reported an increase in SEO return on investment in the last year.
