Businesses starting out in the world of search engine optimisation (SEO) should first ensure they have a solid reputation in place.
This is according to Matt Cutts of Google, who told the Irish Times that "if you want to get a reputation, start small [and] expand in your niche".
For example, it is best to build an image as a company specialising in a particular product in a specific location rather than as a worldwide authority on a broader range of offerings.
Mr Cutts also highlighted the importance of good website content - such as a blog - when it comes to SEO, remarking: "The more content you have, the more ways we can find you."
With website speed also becoming a ranking factor - albeit a minor one - web designers would do well to improve the user experience by making their online pages fast-loading, he added.
Less than one per cent of all search queries will change due to Google incorporating site speed into its ranking - meaning that even fewer search results will be affected, the search engine revealed earlier this year.
