Ecommerce sites could boost their presence in search engine listings by harnessing the potential of link bait.

This is according to Jill Kocher of Covario, who says in a column for Practical Ecommerce that content designed to attract visitors who then pass the links on to other can offer significant search engine optimisation (SEO) results.

Some of the types of link bait that online retailers could consider developing include useful guides and 'how to' articles related to their products, as well as incentivised content such as secret sales, competitions and special offers.

Online news link bait can also be particularly simple to implement, while also being effective, Ms Kocher comments.

Being the first website to report on breaking news and adding expert commentary to these articles can be highly beneficial, she notes.

"The news hook ... requires commitment and consistency to develop a reputation for being the go-to source for news on a topic," Ms Kocher says.

Ecommerce sites looking to get their news articles into Google News should use permanent and unique URLs, make story publication dates explicit and keep all original content separate from any press releases also on their websites, the news aggregator advises.
