Good content 'is important in SEO'

Search engine optimisation (SEO) is as much about coming up with high-quality content as it is about obtaining links to this content, an expert has claimed.

Writing for Search Engine Land, online retail marketing specialist Scott Smigler recalled a recent event he attended where a panel of SEO executives were asked what they would recommend their clients do should they suddenly have an extra $1 million to spend.

Most of those on the panel agreed that these clients should invest the entire sum in creating good content.

Mr Smigler went on to note that it is actually "rare" that good content gets linked to as the fact that Google had indexed one trillion pages as of last year means that there is a very low likelihood of a web user coming across a particular page by randomly clicking on links.

"There are many ways to help good content get linked to, but the practical reality is that these same techniques are more often used to help all content get linked to, regardless of the content's quality," he commented.

Lee Odden of the Online Marketing Blog said earlier this month that making an effort to publish fresh and high-quality content on a regular basis - such as news articles - may have a positive effect on both SEO and social media marketing campaigns.
