A Google executive has revealed one of the ways the company's search quality group ranks results.

The Google fellow in charge of the ranking team Amit Singhal remarked the firm has certain philosophies which it uses to judge results.

According to the engineer, the search giant does not edit the order in which results appear, preferring to judge them using the subjective opinions of users and the sites they link to.

He explained the company believes the web is built "by people", adding "the final ordering of the results is decided by our algorithms using the contributions of the greater internet community, not manually by us".

The system judges web pages based on a group of algorithms which choose the most relevant for each web search and prioritise these results.

Online Marketing UK has said search engines look for sites which are constantly being updated or adding to their content.

According to the search engine optimisation advice site, recent surveys have shown more than 60 per cent of internet users click on a link in the first page of search engine results.
