Forward planning helps when it comes to search engine optimisation (SEO), it has been suggested.

According to Steve Hawkins from web design company Caged Fish, companies need to consider how their website will perform in search rankings when they are in the process of building them.

Later this month, the web expert will be hosting a seminar in Market Harborough, Leicestershire where he will offer advice on web development.

"The question we always get asked is 'Why can't I find my site on Google?'," Mr Hawkins explained. "When people commission a site to be built, quite often thought is not given at the outset to the objectives of the site."

Last week, CatchFriday.com's Lawrence Perry claimed on the Official Wire website that microblogging site Twitter can be used as an additional method for reaching a target audience through a company's SEO strategy.

However, he indicated that it should not be used as a main source of directing web traffic.
