The online arm of the Irish Independent is to take greater advantage of search engine optimisation (SEO) as part of a new internet strategy.

According to Silicon Republic, the newspaper has installed new semantic web software that will automatically pinpoint the names of organisations, people, places and products as they are published in the Irish Independent's online news stories.

This will help to offer better contextual content for readers, including news articles, blogs, videos and audio from around the web, Independent Digital managing director Ian Byrne said.

Patrick Lenehan, chief technology officer at Independent Digital, added: "Reader feedback is that they enjoy the new user experience because it helps them unlock more relevant information about subjects that interest them. The SEO boost is also very strong."

The newspaper's new web strategy also includes a bigger focus on RSSnews feeds, as well as social bookmarking.

Independent Digital is owned by Independent News & Media Group and operates 21 websites that deliver more than 22 million page impressions.ADNFCR-1351-ID-18904311-ADNFCR
