Lead generation is the biggest growth area in online marketing, according to a recently held affiliate marketing conference.

The A4U Expo had a number of speakers including Diana Herriott, Clash-Media marketing director, and predicted that the amount of online lead generation is set to double in size by 2009.

Online leads were praised specifically for being targeted, relevant and providing higher conversion rates when compared to other marketing forms.

The conference found that despite some early teething problems concerning lead quality and relevance, lead generation was now rapidly growing and set to be worth more than £2 billion by the end of 2008.

Ms Herriott said: "Part of the problem with online lead generation stems from the fact that some early players specialised in incentivised data collection, with people only participating to win a prize, not because they have a genuine interest in the product advertised."

However, a number of approaches have allayed web users' fears of lead generation. Qualified online content that had been subjected to a rigorous cleansing process before client delivery was a key approach in vetting content, she added.
