Link architecture is a key element of an effective search engine optimisation (SEO) strategy, it has been announced.

In a post on Google's webmaster central blog, Maile Ohye, who holds the position of developer programs tech lead with the search engine firm, explains link architecture is the method of internal linking on a website.

She notes the technique plays a "critical role" in Googlebot's ability to find a site's pages and also ensures users can navigate around an online resource.

Ms Ohye explains it is wise to keep important webpages within several clicks of a site's homepage as this can make it easier for search engine crawlers to find them than through pulldown menus and search boxes.

She also recommends marketers make use of descriptive anchor text on their sites as this is a "useful signal" to help search engines better understand content.

"The more Google knows about your site - through your content, page titles, anchor text, etc - the more relevant results we can return for users," Ms Ohye concludes.

Meanwhile, CNet recently reported Google has begun showing text adverts next to some of its image search results.ADNFCR-1351-ID-18815909-ADNFCR
