Charities need a sound search engine optimisation(SEO) strategy just as much as online retailers, according to one expert.

Stephan Spencer of Practical eCommerce noted that charity sites are similar to e-commerce ones in that they tend to use secure transactions to receive donations from the public.

They also run into the same SEO problems as retailers, despite not using an online shopping cart, he commented.

Looking at the Combat Blindness Foundation's website, he said that the charity could do more to make use of keywords on the homepage and resolve their URL canonicalisation and redirect issues.

Furthermore, the website uses JavaScript as part of its navigation, meaning that search engines cannot index the links contained within it.

"The amount of text on the homepage is minimal and more focused around numbers than on the services offered," he added.

Charities wanting to refine their SEO strategies may want to refer to SEO Book's guide to SEO for non-profit organisations, which was launched in December last year.
