Online presence 'important to small firms'

An online presence can be a very important part of raising the profile of a small business, an expert has asserted.
John De Groot, managing director of
Startup Co, an organisation which supports those setting up a business, said having a web-based presence can be a useful tool in improving a firm's profile and credibility.
This, he continued, is a very important aspect of business.
"It can illustrate achievements, clients, partners, awards, editorial, opinion, et cetera," Mr De Groot explained.
However, last year research conducted by Microsoft's
adCenter showed that while 2.79 million small businesses have an online presence, more than 60 per cent are not investing in search marketing campaigns.
This, it suggested, means that many websites are simply invisible to consumers.
Nigel Leggatt, marketing manager at adCenter, remarked that websites are vital but that simply having one is not enough to compete.
He urged firms to use search engine marketing tactics to drive their potential consumers to their pages.
