Search engine optimisation (SEO) has ranked first in a poll of the top internet marketing techniques for use in a recession.
Carried out by TopRank, the study placed SEO ahead of blogging and pay per click as the top strategy to be given the most attention over the next six months.
SEO took 36 per cent of the votes, while blogging received a third (33 per cent), followed by pay per click with just over a quarter (26 per cent).
Other techniques listed included social networking (21 per cent), affiliate marketing (11 per cent) and video marketing (seven per cent).
Sector commentator Lee Odden states exploiting social media is an effective long-term tactic which can incorporate SEO into it.
He adds: "SEO factors into many aspects of social media (think keywords and tags) along with being a highly effective tactic on its own. Many of the marketers taking this poll realise that and have responded accordingly."
Meanwhile, a study by marketing analytics firm Covari recently noted a spike in year-on-year paid search spending growth to 51 per cent from a 43 per cent growth rate in the previous quarterly investigation.
