A good search engine optimisation (SEO) strategy will combine relevant content with professional web design, according to one expert.
Rob Cooper of JumpStartWeb.com tells the Sydney Morning Herald that "abundant" content specific to the purpose of the business and the needs of customers is important when it comes to ranking well in Google.
Online copy should incorporate calls to action that clearly dictate which steps consumers should take next if they are interested in the company's products, he adds.
"Every page should repeatedly feature one keyword. Ensure the page you choose for each keyword is relevant to the page that you optimise. Embed that keyword several times," Mr Cooper comments.
Other tips offered to small firms starting out in SEO include researching the keywords targeted by their rivals and taking advantage of metadata such as title tags to focus on specific terms.
Google's Matt Cutts says that some of the main things businesses should do when it comes to SEO including setting up a blog and making regular posts and getting other websites to link back to them, according to USA Today.
