Search data reveals rising popularity of vouchers

Online searches for vouchers have risen significantly in the last few weeks, according to new figures from Hitwise.

The research company revealed that web searches for vouchers peaked in the week ending December 13th last year, up 143 per cent compared with 2007.

This is in contrast to a 3.2 per cent year-on-year increase in searches for retail sales, Hitwise research director Robin Goad noted.

He explained that retail sites are also benefiting from this increased interest in online vouchers, with one in every 140 visits to a typical e-commerce site coming from a voucher website.

The figures may be useful for retailers looking to improve their search engine optimisation strategy, as optimising sites for voucher-related terms could help to drive traffic.

"Voucher searches peaked in the middle of December, while sales searches dramatically spike after Christmas. The variation in voucher searches is also notably less, implying that sales searches only have a limited lifespan, while vouchers are more consistent," Mr Goad stated.

The Internet Advertising Bureau launched a code of practice for those offering online vouchers in November last year.ADNFCR-1351-ID-18974664-ADNFCR
