Businesses should only implement search engine optimisation(SEO) techniques once they have a clear direction in mind for their brands, it has been advised.

Speaking at EyeforTravel's 2009 Travel Distribution Summit Asia event, Steve Sherlock of Oodles.com said that too many start-ups rely solely on SEO and search engine marketing to build up the value of their brands.

He recommended that these companies focus on making their product range and reputation as attractive as possible and convincing customers that the company is likely to be a long-term player in the market, eTravel Blackboard reports.

"Don't do SEO until you have a direction for your brand, otherwise you might get enough business to keep you going but you will never work out a clear direction," Mr Sherlock stated.

Google prefers websites that have a certain level of trust, reputation and authority, according to engineer at the search engine Matt Cutts.

His comments came after Google implemented an algorithm change that means the company focuses more on these and other elements that are important in building up a brand.
