Almost two-thirds of companies intend to invest more in search engine optimisation (SEO) this year compared with 2009, new research has shown.
The poll of more than 1,000 global marketers by Econsultancy and email marketing agency ExactTarget suggests that 64 per cent of firms will increase spending on SEO in 2010, compared with 51 per cent who will do so for paid search.
It also showed that total online marketing budgets look set to increase by 17 per cent on average this year.
The report highlighted the fact that businesses are increasingly taking money away from offline marketing channels in order to spend more on web advertising.
Director of research and strategy at ExactTarget Morgan Stewart remarked: "Interestingly, brand reputation is becoming a more significant driver of the migration to digital marketing, particularly when it comes to social media."
Last year, a report from Econsultancy and Guava indicated that 48 per cent of UK marketers had seen an increase in SEO return on investment in the previous 12 months.
