The arrival of Microsoft's Bing on to the search engine scene will have implications for search engine optimisation (SEO), it has been suggested.

Peter Crisafi, vice-president of web development firm dzine, has claimed that Bing is an instant player in the online news search sector of the internet thanks to the fact it is the default search engine for Yahoo!.

He also suggested that being optimised for search engines is the key to a company's success online.

Explaining the new search landscape, Mr Crisafi said: "What you essentially have right now are two powerhouse search engines that website developers should be mindful of when optimising a website for stronger search engine rankings."

Bing is expected to take a significant percentage of the search market in the coming years, the expert explained.

Recent data published by digital analyst comScore revealed that there were 113 billion searches conducted across the globe in July 2009.

This represented an increase of 41 per cent year-on-year, according to the figures, while Google was the dominant player with 67.5 per cent of the market share.
