Businesses using search engine optimisation (SEO) strategies can find that they benefit from a "good return on investment (ROI)", it has been suggested.

According to Sam Tilston, online marketing director for internet mail order firm Zoombits.co.uk, SEO involves investing up front for long-term gains.

His comments come after a survey by Econsultancy and Guava - dubbed The UK Search Engine Marketing Benchmark Report 2009 - revealed that 45 per cent of companies are increasing their paid search budgets.

Some 48 per cent of respondents reported that SEO ROI grew over the last 12 months, compared to just six per cent who said ROI from this particular online marketing channel had gone down.

Offering his opinions on the research, Mr Tilston indicated that the main way companies can boost web traffic is through search engines - which is one reason why SEO is proving popular.

He also said that successful SEO can lead to a "constant flow of traffic" for companies.
