Many people harbour misunderstandings about search engine optimisation (SEO), an expert has commented.

Jill Whalen, founder and chief executive officer of search engine marketing firm High Rankings, told the Ecommerce-Guide that there are a few areas marketers should concentrate on if they hope to boost their rankings.

She recommended firms fully research the keywords they intend to use, suggesting Google's free keyword tool or paid services.

Furthermore, companies should ensure their website is designed well and utilises strong internal links, Ms Whalen continued.

She also urged marketers to ensure their keywords are worked naturally into their copy, suggesting companies ensure their articles mention the name of the product rather than using generic phrases such as "our software".

"If you do nothing else after reading this article but go back to your current website copy and make those changes, you may start gaining targeted traffic for those keyword phrases within a few weeks," Ms Whalen claimed.

High Rankings advises companies that a blog can be a good way of boosting rankings because search engines value regular fresh content.

Other ways to add value to a site include forums, and archived newsletters and press releases, it claims.
