Publishing search-engine optimised press releases is one of the most effective ways for firms to spread their brand, an expert has claimed.

Bill Balderaz, director of viral marketing for online promotions firm ClearSaleing, said such publications can reach large numbers of influencers and ensure the brand is discussed on blogs and RSS feeds.

"Online influencers are the key to any word of mouth marketing programme. When bloggers and other prominent online personalities are spreading the word about your products and services, good things happen," he explained.

Mr Balderaz also highlighted social networking tools as a way of increasing the "online buzz" around a product or service.

Firms can help their publications be social-media friendly by including Technorati tags and "forward to a friend" functions, he continued.

Companies need to generate fresh content and encourage participation to ensure their viral marketing is successful, Mr Balderaz concluded.

According to online marketing company MediaCo, the key to viral marketing is to create something people will be inclined to share with others - whether it is an online game, interesting information or special offers.
