Marketing executives should think carefully before shortening URLs when posting on Twitter, as this can have a detrimental impact on their search engine optimisation (SEO), an industry figure has said.
Aaron Schoenberger, from the the Brainchild Group, said that there has been a proliferation in the number of firms offering URL-shortening services and that reducing the length of the link does have its benefits.
However, the overall effect of shortening the URL will be negative, as it is a crucial part of successful SEO.
"The text in the backlinks built to that particular URL are directly related to its ranking in search engines. If backlinks are being built to a shortened URL and not the real URL, the impact of your Twitter efforts is significantly diminished," Mr Schoenberger said.
Sam Tilston, marketing director of Memorybits.co.uk, recently highlighted the importance of effective SEO to businesses.
He stated that search is the primary way many consumers find information on the internet, which makes a high ranking on search engine results pages all the more important.
