New research has revealed which of the biggest online retailers in the US is most successful when it comes to search engine optimisation (SEO).

The study by Internet Retailer and Conductor found that HP, Amazon and ProFlowers have the most effective SEO campaigns overall, based on metrics such as keyword visibility, resources and analytics.

For keyword visibility, each retailer's most expensive paid search terms were tracked in natural search results on Google, while looking at resources involved checking the number of employees on LinkedIn who had a job function relating to SEO.

In terms of analytics, external technology tools were harnessed to look at each retailer's ability to measure SEO effectiveness.

Seth Besmertnik, chief executive of Conductor, said: "We are glad to see companies making the commitment to technology, resources and tactics to help them get a step ahead of competitors."

The US online retail sector will grow at a compound annual growth rate of ten per cent to reach almost $249 billion (£159.9 billion) by 2014, according to Forrester Research.
