Websites employing search engine optimisation (SEO) techniques might be wise to aim for a top three position, it has been noted.

Figures from Forrester Research and cited by RISMedia observe that 65 per cent of all online sales are generated by sites which rank in the top three search results for their category.

Barry Hurd, president of online marketing consultancy Social Media Systems, writes in the publication that the use of detailed key terms within content is an effective way of achieving a higher search ranking.

He warns, however, that "stuffing" too many keywords into a page is looked upon unfavourably by search engines.

"As a general rule, search engines appreciate using good code and relevant information to index, while they dislike techniques designed to manipulate," he explains.

Social Media Systems explains that it considers the top ten results for any given search term to be the "first page" of rankings.ADNFCR-1351-ID-18423711-ADNFCR
