Those thinking about launching a business blog to bolster their search engine optimisation efforts need to ensure they produce only unique content to climb their way up Google's search listings.

This is according to advice from Econsultancy editor-in-chief Chris Lake, who noted that Google "loves" original content and called on small businesses to devise their blog strategy based on the search terms they most want to rank for.

He went on to recommend that businesses categorise and tag their posts with only the most relevant terms and said that blogs should ideally be frequently updated and offer a unique voice.

"Be opinionated, help users to share your posts, don't let the PR department own the blog, connect with other bloggers, tag and categorise everything, write cool headlines and have fun," Mr Lake advised.

A recent survey by writemysite.co.uk found that the majority of small and medium-sized businesses do not update their blogs at least once a month.
